Do we even need to print photos in this digital age?

The world of digital photography has had two outcomes: on one hand we take way more pictures than we ever did, but on the other hand, we don’t print as many as we used to. Printing photos just doesn’t seem relevant anymore – in a digital world where grandparents can view online photo albums of their grandkids, a single framed photo seems silly. To make things worse, digital photo printing costs money while, photo sharing sites and digital photo albums are free. So is digital photo printing an endangered species? Not at all! In traditional and new ways, the world of digital photo printing is alive and kicking.

There are four main methods to get your digital photo printing done. With either method, we recommend sending in a small amount to see whether you like the results. Here are the methods:

Digital photo printing at home:

Using your home printer has its advantages. It is always available and accessible. There’s no need to walk or drive to the local photo lab. The price per print is more expensive than the price at the photo lab, though. If you include the inks and high-end paper, you’ll start seeing how costs add up. Also, a photo printed at home will have a shorter life because the inks used at home do not have the longevity of the professional inks. There has been lots of progress in this area and we can see home printing costs going down and quality improving in the future.

Home digital photo printing tips: use a high-quality paper (specialty paper that’s sold in photo stores and office supply stores, not regular paper) so that the printouts will look like photographs. Another idea is to use photography software to edit and improve the look of your photos. Last, choose the highest quality setting on your printer.

Digital photo printing at the photo lab:

Photo labs and photo shops are a cheap and efficient way to print your photos. All you have to do is bring your USB drive or a CD, choose the photos you want to print, the size of the prints, and the finish (matte or glossy). Your photos will be ready in a day or two, and you can have your ordered rushed (but that might cost you extra).

Digital photo printing online:

The Internet is a great solution for digital photo printing. All you have to do is choose your provider and upload the photos, and then wait for the photos to arrive in the mail. Once again, we highly recommend sending a small order first to see whether you like how their work.   There are lots of such Internet services.

Printing photo albums:

Many sites help you design, arrange, and print photo albums. You usually download design software to your computer, and choose the item you want to use for your photos (an album, a calendar, mugs, T-shirts, etc.) Each site has different prices and different products. To print a designed photo album you start with downloading the design software (free of charge), and you then design your creation and upload the photos. The website mails you the finished product. It’s important to note that you cannot take the designs you made on that software anywhere else – you have to print it with the website.

Digital photo printing on canvas

Canvas is a type of fabric that works well with photos. Printing on canvas creates something that’s part photo part painting that looks very good on a wall (if it fits your taste and style). Digital photo printing on canvas isn’t cheap, but it’s not very expensive either (anywhere from a few dollars to more than $100 depending on the size of the print). Digital photo printing on canvas is a great option for gifts, or for those very special photos that you want to have showcased.
